Head pipe is the part of the exhaust that goes from the engine cylinder head to the inlet of the muffler. On Savages it is a manufacturerd of double wall tubing that fits into the muffler. Fairly small diameter inside, but large on the outside. Highway Hawk sells a drag pipe that is single wall and is large diameter all the way through. Not much for chrome quality(thickness) and mine has turned blue all the way to the second bend. The baffle that comes with it is a marginal effort to cut the noise or modify the sound. I cut mine off and slid a HD muffler into the pipe, made a bracket to support the HD muffler using the 2 HD holes and 2 Suzuki holes and rubber bushings. It is low and extends about 3" farther back than original. It is still pretty restrictive, so I punched a 1/2 hole in the baffle of the HD. Allows for some exhaust to pass straight through and still some goes through the packing and muffler part. I like the sound and perfromance. The carburetor white spacer (it lowers the tapered main needle into main jet slightly to lean the A/F ratio) is still in place but the idle mixture screw is backed out about 3 turns. I just checked the plug during the 11K miles service and it is a nice toast color all the way down the center electrode. I don't need to use the choke to start until about 50° so it is still not too lean. I run 87 octane in the winter and 89 in the summer(non oxygenated) fuel. Max
